JAMZSESH

JamzSesh is a musicians ticketing concert app that allows artists to promote and sell tickets to their upcoming show. Musicians are able to manage each of their concerts in one location while strategically utilizing their social platforms to build their audience

Laying the foundation

What is the user’s problem?

Musicians would like a more streamlined and consistent process for selling tickets to their shows. They want to be able to efficiently manage their shows and share across various social media platforms.

How will you address the problem?

The goal of the project is to build an effective and user centered mobile app for musicians to manage their shows and focus more of their time on their music

What were your responsibilities throughout the project?

My responsibilities throughout the project were building paper & digital wireframes, creating low and high-fidelity prototypes, as well as conducting research before, during, and after designing

Going in to this research, I assumed musicians would want to be as hands off as possible when planning for their shows. However, what I learned is that they really want consistency, professionalism and organization. Also, many artists are more familiar with planning shows on their own, and it’s the only thing they know. Additionally, they want to be able to reach all of their audiences, wherever they are instead of having to build separately to accommodate each one. With this knowledge, I focused on building an app that would create organization and the ability for the musicians to reach each of their audiences in a streamlined way.

Getting to know the users

Jaman is a 45 year old musician who has been in the music business for over 20 years. While most of his gigs have happened in the local area, he has also sold tickets in a different country. His biggest frustration is the lack of resources that promoters have when creating awareness around the event

I would love to be able to show up to an event and not ever have to worry about promoting the event myself and to only focus on my artistry
— Jaman

Goals

  • Wants to be able to market to a broader network, outside of local area

  • Would love a consistent place to sell tickets

Age: 45

Education: High School

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Family: Married, 3 kids

Occupation: Musician

Frustrations

  • Lack of promotion from the event organizer

  • There isn’t any consistency amongst the music industry

Defining the problem…..

Jaman is a local musician who needs to be able to share his event across a variety of platforms because this will allow him to have seamless promotion of her event and reach a broader audience

Unprofessionalism

Musicians have to deal with people not being professional when operating an event, so a lot of times they find out things last minute. This app will give them some control over their show

Disorganization

Musicians are unsure of how they will pay the other members of their band, because they are not given a flat fee. This app will show them their revenue so they can properly plan for post show payment.

Various processes

Each host has a different process for pre&post show, and musicians experience a lot of inconsistencies when preparing for their show. This app will give them a consistent expectation for planning for their show, because the process will be the same in setting up their event.

Uninformed

There is a lack of communication amongst the organization hosting the event and the musicians. This app will give the musicians a platform in order to communicate their process for selling tickets for their show.

Let’s take you on a journey with Jaman…..

Jaman wants to be able to sell tickets to each of his individual shows while also tracking the progress of those ticket sales. My thought was to have each user create an account in order to have a tracking mechanism specific to each of their shows. I also created a way for them to set up show information by entering the date, time, location, etc. Jaman’s ultimate goal is to sell tickets to his performance on a specific day and time.

Now that we have conducted the research, we can begin designing

In drafting the paper wireframes, I took in to consideration the users needs and pain points. I wanted to create something that would focus on the user and ensure that their frustrations were addressed

When designing this wireframe, I wanted to make sure all of the necessary information that is important to a show was included and the musician could enter those details. I also wanted to make it quicker for musicians to enter details for multiple events without having to start over each time.

NOTE: This is where the user will enter details about their show. At this point, musicians have full control over the information included for their show. The ability to save a draft of the event details entered allows the musicians to return to this section in case they do not have all of the information available at once.

Creating an account on the platform serves as a way to store history and as a tracking mechanism for current & past events. It also creates personalization for each artist.

NOTE: If a musician is new to the platform, they will select the “new artist” option to create a new account. On the other hand, if the musician has already set up an account, they will be able to easily & quickly login instead of having to create a new account each time

When the user first visits the app, they will create an account by selecting “new artist”. After entering their account information, they land on their dashboard where they can select to edit details for their show

Testing the low-fidelity prototype

I conducted an unmoderated usability study in order to determine if users are easily able to set up their account, enter the important information for their event, and publish their event in order to share on their social platforms. I wanted to understand the challenges that users face in the event creation and account access/set-up process.

Round 1 Findings

Users need the ability to confirm their event information prior to publishing the event

Users need the ability to enter all of the pertinent information regarding their event

Users would like to preview the content that will be included on their social channel prior to sharing on their feeds

Round 2 Findings

Users want the ability to track analytics across all events

Users felt like the account creation page included too much information

Users need the ability to create multiple shows seamlessly

After completing the initial designs and performing user research on the low-fidelity prototypes, I refined the designs based on the insights derived from the research

In the initial designs, I wanted to account for all fields that I thought would be relevant to the account holder’s information. However, after the first usability study, I realized that it was too much for the user, so I scaled back on the information collected during sign up

When creating the event creation page, my thought was that the user would enter all relevant information and be able to immediately publish the event. However, after the usability study, I realized that there needs to be a confirmation step in case there are any errors while transcribing the information. This allows the user to account for those errors prior to making the event live

The final high fidelity prototype accounted for the user needs and provides a more seamless and clean user flow for creating and managing their shows.

While designing, I took into consideration the accessibility of the app

Considered visually impaired by utilizing colors that would be easy to read and including text for screen readers

Used images that are universal that would help all users understand designs

Used icons for screen readers and to help navigation easier

Moving forward…

I learned that the best and most efficient app puts the user first and in considering their needs, you can design something that would be impactful and effective to the user accomplishing their goals. My next steps with this project would be to do the following:

Conduct another usability study to iterate on designs and ensure designs address user pain points

Conduct additional user research to determine other needs
